Using the Xerox Phaser 3117 with Mac OS X

I got a cheap Xerox Phaser 3117 but for my dissapointment, there were no drivers for Mac OS X.

The solution is to install the Samsung GDI driver to use the printer. Once I did that, the printer worked like a charm.

The Samsung GDI driver for Mac OS X is open source and can be found at:

http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/MacOSX/samsung-gdi

UPDATE:

If you're having trouble with top margins, here's a new driver:

http://guigo.us/mac/splix/

You will have to uninstall and reinstall your printer.

I know this driver also works with:

Dell 1100, 1110
Samsung CLP-200, CLP-300, CLP-500, CLP-600, CLP-610, CLX-216X, CLX-2170, CLX-3160, ML-1510, ML-1520, ML-1610, ML-1630, ML-1710, ML-1740, ML-1750, ML-2010, ML-2150, ML-2250, ML-2510, ML-2550, ML-2571, ML-3050, ML-3560
Xerox Phaser 3115, 3116, 3117, 3120, 3121, 3122, 3130, 3150, 3420, 3425, 5500, 6100, 6110

Good luck!

In some strage way it is not working for me.
I do find th e printer in the Printer Browser, and i can select the proper ppd.

When I print something the printer software starts up, saying its prepairing the print command, but then it just stops, and the printer stays idle.

The print job is then moved from 'active' to completed.

Why is this?

This is such an amazingly brilliant solution. How did you figure it out? and why does the Samsung GDI driver for Mac OS X work for the Xerox Phaser 3117?

I am assuming it is because it is working either with the "gdi" GhostScript driver or with the Linux driver supplied on the CD coming with the printer. The manufacturer-supplied driver is probably more reliable and makes all the printer's functionality available, but the GhostScript driver comeswith every modern distribution. Am i correct?

Thank you for this!

Thanks so much. It works good, but I am afraid that I have the same problem with margins... Any ideas? Can this be because of an inappropriate driver?

Hi!

Thank you for the tip! But I still have a problem.. when I print Word documents it doesnt respect de top margin and it prints the title very near to the top.

That may be a driver problem? Because I tried to correct it with every probable adjustment that could be bothering.

When I added the printer to my printers list in the preferences y chose the "Generic GDI Printer Foomatic/gdi" one. Is that right?

Thanks!

Hi Carlo. Maybe you could help me. i was trying install in OS 10.11 the Splix to use my Phaser 3121 but i didn't have success. Do you know what i can do to be able to use the Phaser again? Thanks!

In order to get it to work on the latest OSx versions, do the following:

1- Download Split 2.0.0 source code from http://splix.ap2c.org (splix-2.0.0.tar.bz2)
2- Unzip it to a temporary folder that you are to delete once done
3- Plug in your printer
4- Open System Preferences > Printers and Add your printer
5- Expand the “Print Using” field and then within the opened menu, select Other and it will open a ‘file selection’ dialog.
6- In the temporary folder where you unzipped Split 2.0.0, browse inside the /ppd folder and find your printer model (Choose the ml1520.ppd NOT ph3117)
7- Click Open and then if it worked like for me, the “Print Using” field should now be populated with something similar to “Samsung ML-1520, SpliX V. 2.0.0″
8- Click Add
9- Print your test page and have fun
